Founded and run by an ex-environmental scientist, Autonomy Distillers is a venture with a ton of drive to do things a little differently. As you’d expect, sustainability sits at the core of their beliefs. They collect waste fruit for use in their products and shred all incoming cardboard for reuse as packing material.

Autonomy Orange Liqueur is a labour intensive spirit to make. Hundreds of kilos of orange skins left over from a local fruit juicy factory’s industrial presser have their thin rind carefully grated off for infusion. If you’ve ever tried grating a dry floppy flap of orange, you’ll know the feeling! The rind is infused in neutral spirit then distilled, a process which is done slowly to ensure the cuts are taken at the right time. The liqueur is then sweetened and bottled.

Tasting notes:

Bold and warming citrus notes balanced by sweetness and a silky, luxurious mouthfeel. Highly comparable to Cointreau in our opinion (but with a way cooler story).

Serving suggestions:

  • Breakfast Martini. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and pour in 50ml gin, 15ml orange liqueur, 15ml lemon juice and 1tbsp marmalade. Shake, then strain into a martini glass and garnish with an orange peel.
  • Margarita On The Rocks. Combine 50ml tequila, 30ml Orange Liqueur and 20ml lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake. Strain into a rocks glass with a salted rim, and garnish with a lime wedge.
